Bed bugs can be a real nuisance. The longer they’re in your home the more of a problem and even potential danger they’ll become for you and anyone else living with you. Knowing the dangers of bed bugs and how to tell if you have a bed bug problem is the first step in knowing when to call a bed bug exterminator.
The Dangers of Bed Bugs
Not only are they annoying, but bed bugs can potentially cause serious problems for you and your family. Not everyone will have the same reaction to being bit by a bed bug though. The most common symptoms of being bitten is a swollen red spot on your skin. You may not feel it immediately, but after a few days you can potentially start feeling a few different symptoms. For one, the area that was bitten can become itchy and you’ll feel a burning sensation. The bite may even become a blister. However, some people are at risk of having a serious allergic reaction to the bite. On top of that, you have a chance of getting a secondary infection such as ecthyma, impetigo, and lymphangitis.
Signs That You May Have Bed Bugs
There are a few different ways that you can tell if you’re dealing with bed bugs or not. Here are a few different signs of bed bugs that you can look for.
The Bites
A number of different things can leave you with red spots on your skin, but bed bug bites are unique. Before you take care of the bite, you should examine it. As stated before, there are a few different ways to tell a bed bug’s bite apart from something else. If it is a bite from a bed bug, the red spot may have a dark spot in the center of it from where the bed bug attached itself to you. The bites will also commonly be found close together and in a zig-zag pattern. Feeling a burning and itchy sensation on the red spot is also an indicator that you’re dealing with bed bugs.
Searching for Clues
Bed bugs vary in size but they’re big enough to spot with the naked eye. They range from light brown to dark brown and have a flat oval shape to them. The first way that you can look for bed bugs is by searching your bed. Get a flashlight or other bright light and start by lifting the blankets and pillows. Next, lift your bed sheet off of your bed and thoroughly inspect not only the sheet but the mattress itself and the seams. As their name implies, bed bugs live on your bed, so the most likely place you’ll find them is there. If you don’t see any bed bugs after inspecting your bed then the next likely place you’ll find a bed bug is on your furniture or even on your pet’s bed if you have one. Just like with your bed, thoroughly check under the cushions and in between the cracks and seams of your furniture with a flashlight. Bed bugs themselves aren’t the only thing you should keep an eye out for. There may be small blood spots on your bed if you were in fact bitten by a bed bug. You should also keep an eye out for small insect feces that the bed bugs leave behind after feeding.
